How to Calculate Your Life Path Number
Here are the steps. Follow them exactly and you’ll get it right every time:
- Write out your full date of birth in numerical form (month / day / year).
- Reduce each component separately. Add the digits of the month together until you get a single digit. Do the same for the day. Do the same for the year. Important: if any component reduces to 11, 22, or 33, stop there. Don’t reduce those further. They’re master numbers.
- Add the three reduced numbers together.
- Reduce the total to a single digit (or master number).
That’s it. Let me show you with a real example.
Notice how 1993 reduced to 22 and we left it alone? That’s because 22 is a master number. We keep it intact during the component stage. It only gets reduced further if the final total isn’t a master number itself.

This one uses only the vowels in your birth name. Same Pythagorean chart, same reduction process, but you ignore all consonants. The Soul Urge number reveals your deepest motivations — what you actually want, underneath all the social conditioning and practical considerations.

Master Numbers: 11, 22, and 33
I mentioned these earlier but they deserve their own section because they confuse people more than anything else in numerology.
Master numbers are double-digit numbers that don’t get reduced. They appear during calculation and they stay as they are. Only three qualify: 11, 22, and 33.
Master Number 11 carries the energy of 2, but amplified. Heightened intuition, emotional sensitivity, spiritual awareness. The flip side: anxiety, self-doubt, feeling overwhelmed by your own perceptions. People with 11 prominent in their chart often describe feeling like their antenna is always turned up too high.
Master Number 22 is the amplified 4. Where 4 builds steady and practical, 22 builds on a grand scale. Visionary ambition, the ability to turn abstract ideas into concrete reality. The pressure is equally grand. The gap between what 22s feel they should accomplish and what they actually do can be paralyzing.

An important clarification: having a master number does not make you special, gifted, or spiritually advanced. It means the volume is turned up — on everything. Common Mistakes When Calculating
Before you go off and calculate every number for everyone you know (you will, it’s addictive), here are the most common errors I see:
- Reducing the full date in one shot. Don’t add all the digits of your birthday together at once. Reduce month, day, and year separately first. The order matters because it determines whether master numbers are preserved correctly.
- Reducing master numbers too early. If you get 11, 22, or 33 during any step of the calculation, stop reducing that component. Only reduce it if the final sum forces further reduction.
- Using your preferred name instead of your birth name. For name-based numbers (Expression, Soul Urge, Personality), always use the name on your original birth certificate. Not your married name, not your nickname, not your legally changed name. The birth name matters because numerology ties it to the moment you entered the world.
- Mixing up vowels and consonants. For Soul Urge and Personality numbers, make sure you’re clear on which letters are vowels. The usual list: A, E, I, O, U. Y is conditional (vowel when it makes a vowel sound).
